The rules are changing. You'll still sleep soundly.
You don't know what you don't know about Making Tax Digital — that's our job. We handle the switch quietly in the background, so it lands as a non-event and you carry on running your business.
Does this affect you — and when?
Two figures. A plain answer. No sign-up.
Indicative guide based on current thresholds. Your actual start date is tested against a specific tax year's return, and this applies to individuals — not limited companies or partnerships. We'll confirm your exact position on a quick call.
It arrives in three steps — by income, not all at once.
MTD for Income Tax means keeping digital records and sending HMRC an update every quarter, instead of one return a year. Whether it applies to you depends on your combined gross income from self-employment and property.
Handled properly, MTD isn't a burden — it's more of the good stuff.
More sleep
No lying awake over quarterly deadlines or new software. It's taken care of.
More control
Up-to-date digital records mean you always know where your numbers actually stand.
Less admin
We set up the systems so the quarterly rhythm runs quietly, not as a scramble.
More time
Less time wrestling with HMRC and software means more time on the business — and your family.
It all starts with a conversation.
The point of bringing us in early isn't more admin for you — it's less. Three steps and the switch becomes routine.
The kind of accountant you can talk to plainly.
SJC Accountancy Services is a small, personal practice — you deal directly with one person, not a call queue or a rotating account manager. We aim to become part of your business, which is exactly why a change like MTD becomes our problem to manage, not yours to worry about.
We work with sole traders, landlords and small businesses across the UK, digitally, with a local base in Bromsgrove for anyone who prefers a face and a phone number nearby.

The questions people actually ask
Is my income measured before or after expenses? +
Before. The threshold test uses your gross income — total turnover from self-employment plus gross rental income, added together, before any expenses come off. So it's possible to be well under the threshold on profit but over it on qualifying income.
I run a limited company — does this apply to me? +
Not for MTD for Income Tax. This affects individuals: sole traders and landlords. Company directors sit outside it, though your company has its own separate digital record-keeping obligations we can talk through.
I'm already using spreadsheets — is that enough? +
Once you're mandated, records need to be kept digitally and filed through compatible software. Spreadsheets alone don't meet that unless paired with bridging software. We'll get you onto something that fits how you work.
My income is close to the line — should I do anything now? +
Worth a conversation. If you're near a threshold, a single stronger year can pull you in the following April, so it helps to be set up before that happens rather than after. We'll tell you honestly whether to act now or simply keep an eye on it.
